As most gamers know, November was a huge month for sequels and gamers of any platform. Just a few of the month’s big name releases were, Dragon Age, Modern Warfare 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and Assassins Creed II.
Of the four releases, Assassins Creed II was by far the greatest improvement and possibly one of the most well rounded games released in 2009.
Assassins Creed was a bit of an outcast due to the monotonous game play and repetitive “Hack n’ Slash” feel. However the sequel did a wonderful job of not only remedying a lot of that but even adding in some new elements while blending the story perfectly.
The Assassin’s Creed sequel begins with, character Desmond Miles escaping from the grasp of Abstergo Industries and hiding away in with a small group of Assassins. Who have been able to replicate a new Animus, which they intend to use as a quick crash course training system, for your character, Desmond. You’re then thrust into late 15th Century Italy, as Ezio. A victim of betrayal who is then forced to become a revenge driven Assassin and balance the sides between the templar and assassins.
The story does a wonderful job of keeping you on edge, and just like the first release, the end will always surprise you. Also the developers did a superb job at filling in the repetitive parts with even more story, the occasional side quest, and a few new features. One new addition is the ability to purchase gear and upgrades by collecting “florins” through assassinations or other means. Another exciting plus is Ezio now controls what is known as “The Villa” which is used as your base of operations. You can then choose to invest money in local vendors to both improve the overall wealth of your city and even get some discounts off of your purchases. Among these, they’ve added in some new combat features, including weapons. This then opens the way to more creative ways to complete you overall objective. To kill. Your assassin is now armed with twin hidden blades, smoke bombs, throwing knives, a dagger, and even a hidden gun. And of course what would any 15th century assassin be without their trusty sword.
Any gamer who was disappointed with the first Assassin’s Creed, will be impressed with the huge improvements in this new edition. I would have to rate Assassin’s Creed II as a 4 out of 5. When considering the huge improvements and the new character progression elements they introduced. The graphics are still impressive, and the story is still as addictive as nicotine. The only cons to the game would be in its lack of character development on the side of Desmond. His character base is fairly limited and all that’s really known is that he’s an ex-bar tender turned Assassin.
Overall, Ubisoft has gone above what was expected and really dug themselves out a hole with the Assassin’s Creed series. I applaud you.
When I played the original Assassins Creed I had a hard time staying interested in the game. I never came close to finishing the game, or cared if I did. I found it very repetitive and really pretty boring. I personally had a hard knowing where I was going when traveling from city to city. That really killed the game for me.
I did see the potential for a really fun game, once things were fixed though.
Assassins Creed 2 fixed almost all of the gripes I had with the first one. While still somewhat repetitive, I actually cared what I was doing and saw a purpose for it. The different ways of traveling from city to city was HUGE for me also. Being able to pay a small fee to go to the city/location I wanted helped to eliminate the monotonous traveling that ultimately made me give up the first one.
There are a lot of other improvements from the first game I won’t comment on, but big props the Ubisoft on this game. As a gamer that did not enjoy the first one at all, I highly recommend this one.
So if you sitting on the fence about playing it, go check it out. It really is a top notch game you should not miss out on.
I loved the idea of micromanaging the Villa. I actually have a lot of fun doing that for some strange reason! It almost makes me think of a noble Grand Theft Auto…lol
The Villa was a huge plus for me. It kind of tossed a little bit ofFable in there with that one, with you being able to collect money from your properties and gain more money each time you spend more.
For sure, the Villa gave you a “Purpose” for collecting stuff. A lot of games you just collect stuff to collect stuff. Totally agree with you Tikrin, it was fun for some reason.
After beating the game, i stuck around to try and earn some more money so I could totally max out the Villa… That whole part of the game was actually pretty genius lol
