An Editorial Opinion of ODST

halo3odst7-11I guess the topic closest for grabs, would be Halo ODST. Being the latest game I’ve purchased for the 360, I was one of many that actually took the time and stood in line for over 2 hours till the release. The excitement outside the store was nothing short of eccentric nerdiness. The 2 hours waiting were passed by talking about our glorious Halo moments, those hilarious encounters, and Halo legends.

The hilarity of it all was the childlike behavior that had taken over when the doors were at last unlocked. The people suddenly resorted to their basic primal instincts, and one by one, like the Neanderthal, each of the O’so dedicated gamers emerged with their prize. Halo ODST.

I was however disappointed. After driving home with high anticipation for the most advertised and hyped up addition to the Halo series. Being the huge Bungie fan I am and an even bigger Microsoft/Xbox fan, nothing could knock them off of the pedestal I have so willingly made for them. But, in short, the ODST addition was a drag to say the least.

The graphics were sadly lacking, especially compared to its predecessors (the Halo Trilogy). The cut scene animations looked like a souped up version of Pinocchio that was recently released from the famed Disney vault and surprisingly the story line was just as far fetched.

The biggest let down of all was the misleading all the way up to the fateful night of the release… When I had heard about Halo ODST, which was about 5 seconds after Bungie announced it, I was given the impression the game was going to be more Call of Duty-ish. Which would have offered a much more realistic military type feel. However that’s not the case. While the ODST are in many aspects JUST like Master Chief they’re still unable to take as much damage as their cohort 117. Fueling my disappointment, being one of many, I also paid about $67 for my copy, and for my small compact car armed with a whopping 10 gallon tank, I’m sure you can imagine how frustrated I was, when I figured I could fill my beast of a vehicle up several times with my squandered cash. Yet another astonishing let down was that it seems the enemy has gotten stronger, better, and faster (thank you O‚Daft Punk, for your lyrical wisdom) So not only are you left with crappier health but you have a trove of mad brutes heading your direction, and to thicken the plot you have nothing but a BB gun at your disposal… much to your dismay… you have only 3 BBs left in the chamber.

While on the positive side, I do enjoy the armor make up on the game… while its a little less customizable it is still as entertaining as it was, gathering the armor pieces in number 3. And I’m a big fan of the Firefight mode. Which is something I think a lot of first person shooter games are going to be doing in the near future. For example, the latest Resident Evil and COD5 (Call of Duty 5: World at War) all have a new survival mode in which you have limitless rounds and you duke it out with hordes of enemies.

While I still love and respect Bungie, and will be pre-ordering and purchasing Halo: Reach, I am saddened by your performance in the last release. All I have to say is…Step it up boys… just because you‚re the most successful console gaming company in the world, doesn’t mean you can loosen your belts. Gamers everywhere are looking to you… and we expect perfection.

I actually thought the brutes, and other covenant were easier. The hunters died quicker, the brutes didn’t hit as hard, and the grunts fell over quicker…

Only thing they were better at was taking a punch which made sense, since they were regular humans. Not a souped-up cybernetically enhanced human who could crush an ODST’s insides with one punch.

See what I did there in that last paragraph? I put sense and since by each other…Yep, I’m pretty cool. :D

Yay! It made it to the site! The main thing I was talking about (should have touched more on it) was that the enemies are a lot smarter. Which the Halo series has always upped the enemies in that since with each new addition. For example when you stuck a grunt on Halo 1, they would go insane and run straight for the other covenant allies and blow them all away… now, theyve apparently got nothing to live for and charge RIGHT AT YOU! And overall the enemies seem a lot better at avoiding danger. You could be a mile off, and it seems the Brutes can tell youre aiming at there Hairy little heads through a sniper rifle.

Oh, heh, yeah I definitely noticed throwing grenades and they charge at you…Maybe since they know you don’t have shields they have a better chance of taking you out?

I mean, if a cyborg attaches a grenade to you, you aren’t going to take him out, so why not take out those other grunts who were calling you bad names? Hehe, it’d be funny to see a fanfiction over the life of a grunt…
